The alchemist creates his/her work in a crucible - at an important stage the crucible is hermetically sealed so that nothing is lost and wasted, transmutation is about the total change of one thing to another.

The crucible may be likened to a terrarium - an ecosystem. To break the seal is to unbalance the elements and all is lost.

When one takes the reins of the chariot of their life they assume responsibility for their life and choices, not to do this is to break the glass crucible -- people in glass houses are wise to not throw away their stone.
